Chang was born in and raised outside New York City by immigrant parents. She lived in China for a decade as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal before she wrote “Factory Girls.” During her time there, her stories focused on the changes in society, institutions and individuals, brought about by China’s economic development.
Chang has also written for the National Geographic and worked as a journalist in the Czech Republic and Taiwan. She graduated from Harvard University with a degree in American history and literature.
“Factory Girls” is Chang’s first book.
