Centralia, Pennsylvania
It’s the lack of things to see that draws people to Centralia, PN. Centralia was just like any other Pennsylvania coal mining town in the 1960s. However, in 1962, a fire started in the town garbage that spread below the entire valley and endangered the community’s existence.
Over the next few years, the fire continued to burn around Centralia, increasing the levels of toxic gases (carbon monoxide) to dangerous levels. By 1990, only 63 residents remained and by 2012, there were only 10 people left in Centralia.
